Biography

Birth

Ammi was born[1] in Acworth[2] on 18 Nov 1806. The name Acworth was given to the town[2] in memory of Sir Jacob Acworth[3][4]but it is unclear what the detailed relationship was., New Hampshire in August 1800.

Marriage

Ammi married[5] Lydia Fifield who died on 18 April 1865 and was buried in Appleton Cemetery, Deering, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Ammi and Lydia had seven children:

In the 1870 Census[9] Ammi (age 69) is a Farmer, in Hillsborough, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, living with his wife Emeline (age 69).

In the 1880 Census[10] Ammi (age 79) is still living with his wife Emeline.

Death

Ammi died[11] on 24 Dec 1887 (age 87), son of David Smith & Eleanor Smith, in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, USA. He was buried[12] on 24 Dec 1887 in Hillsborough.

Research Notes

Ammi is mentioned in the Genealogical and family history of the state of New Hampshire[1]

He early became connected with the lumber industry, and operated a saw mill at Hillsborough for some years, conducting a profitable business. About 1833 he went to Saxton's River, Vermont, and engaged in the manufacture of woolen goods, which he continued for fourteen years with marked success. In 1847 he moved to Hillsborough, retired from business, and died December 24, 1887. Mr. Smith was married, in 1826, to Lydia F. Butler, daughter of Dr. Elijah and Lydia (Fifield) Butler, of Weare; she was born in Weare, New Hampshire, August 29, 1802, and died at Hillsborough in April, 1865. Eight children were born to Ammi and Mrs. Smith : Eliza. Ann, Frank Pierce, John Butler, Cynthia Jane, Lydia Ellen, and three who died in early childhood. Eliza Ann married Frederick W. Gould, of Hillsborough.

Ammi is also noted in the History of Hillsborough[13] (Page 523)

Ammi, s. of David, s. of John, s. of Thomas, was b. in Acworth, Aug. 17, 1800, and came to H. with his parents in 1819. In 1822, having purchased of John Grimes, at Bridge Village, his saw and grist mill, he established himself in the lumber business in association with his brother Sandy. Selling out his interest here in 1833, two years later he removed to Saxton's River, Vt., and having purchased a woolen mill there he engaged in manufacturing until 1847, when he returned to H., where he res. until his death, Dec. 24, 1887. He was one of the Selectmen in 1850 and 185 1 ; was a Director in the Contoocook Valley Railroad, and also of the First National Bank of Hillsborough. He m. first, Dec. 4, 1825, Lydia F., dau. of Dr. Elijah and Lydia (Fifield) Butler, who was the mother of all of his children. She d. April 18, 1865, and he m. second, Mrs. Eveline (Priest) Robbins.
